Responsible Gaming
At Prophet Exchange, we reinforce responsible gambling attitudes with guidelines to support a fun, safe and ethical environment. Responsible gaming stems from a realistic view of gaming as a source of entertainment and an understanding of the risk involved. This attitude means staying within spending limits and ensuring that gambling does not cause any lasting personal harm. Wins should be considered a fun bonus and losses should be within a person’s budget.
If a person cannot maintain a responsible gambling attitude, then he or she may be at risk for problem or disordered gaming. Prophet offers the following tools to assist with ensuring pure entertainment and responsible gambling:
- Providing information for players about the risks of gambling and ways to responsibly gamble
- Providing information and resources to problem gamblers seeking help
- Training staff to recognize and intervene when players are showing symptoms of problem gambling
- Training staff to notice problematic alcohol consumption and intervene
- Avoiding marketing efforts that target high-risk or problem gamblers
- Helping to prevent underage players from gambling
Prophet Exchange also provides players the ability to set their own budgets, limits, and cool-off periods. Prophet Exchange always gives the player the option to self-exclude, and the tools to do it efficiently and effectively.
Understanding Problem Gaming
Prophet Exchange understands that players who are unable to gamble responsibly may fall into high-risk or problem gambling behaviors. Problem gambling covers a wide range of behaviors such as irresponsibly risky bets or compulsive wagering that cause minor disruptions to the gambler’s job, home, or family life. These tendencies can also lead to addictive behavior that cause major problems such as the loss of one’s savings, home, employment or relationship.
It can sometimes be difficult to notice problem gambling behavior because it often does not have immediate physical symptoms.
Typically, problem gambling presents itself through the following symptoms:
- Repeated requests to borrow money from family and friends
- Sudden selling of their possessions to raise money
- Consciously hiding gambling losses from others
- Attempting to hide gambling activity from others
- Gambling repeatedly with the goal of making back losses
- Using gambling repeatedly to escape stress or emotions
- Increasing betting amounts to chase a thrill
- Becoming unstable or irritable when not gambling
- Exhibiting bouts of sadness and remorse after gambling
- A disregard for hygiene and health
- Missing work, school, or family commitments to gamble
Underage Gaming – The Law
There are several Federal prohibitions and restrictions regarding Internet gaming which include, but are not limited to, 18 U.S.C. §§ 1084 et seq. (the “Wire Act”) and 31 U.S.C. §§ 3163 through 3167 (the “Unlawful Internet Gaming Enforcement Act”).
It is a Federal offense for persons physically located outside of New Jersey to engage in Internet wagering through a New Jersey casino or New Jersey Internet gaming website. The Casino Control Act (N.J.S.A. 5:12-119) prohibits anyone under the age of 21 from gambling in an Atlantic City casino or any simulcast facility. If an individual is convicted of underage gambling the penalty is a disorderly persons offense which is a criminal charge that becomes part of your criminal record. A conviction for underage gambling will also result in a fine of between $500 and $1,000 and the individual's driver's license will be suspended for six months. If the individual is under 17 and has not yet obtained a driver's license, the issuance of that person's driver's license will be postponed for six months.
If a parent or a person who has custody or control of a person under the age of 21 allows an underage individual to gamble, that person can be charged with a disorderly persons offense. N.J.S.A. 5:12-119(c).
